HÀ NỘI — Prime Minister Nguyễn Xuân Phúc sent his congratulation to the national women's football team who won the ASEAN Football Federation Championship on Tuesday in Thailand.
The team defeated defending champions Thailand, who played in the FIFA World Cup in France last month, 1-0 in the final with the only goal scored by captain Huỳnh Như in extra time.
It has been seven years since the team's last trophy at the tournament and their third overall and is their third title to date.
PM Phúc said he appreciated the team's determination and bravery during the tournament and wished the squad good luck for future tournaments.
Việt Nam dominated the championship with 24 goals scored and only one conceded, courtesy of an own goal in the semi-final.
Việt Nam Football Federation Vice President Trần Quốc Tuấn said: "We are proud of the women. Our young generation has grown up and can take care of heavy duty. The victory will be a strong push for our next tasks at the 30th SEA Games this November and at the 2020 Olympics Asian zone qualifier."
The team, who are expected to arrive home this afternoon, have been awarded VNĐ1.3 billion (US$56,000) from the VFF for their success. — VNS
