HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam Football Federation Vice President Trần Quốc Tuấn has been appointed chairman of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)’s Competitions Committee.
It is the first time a Vietnamese person has held the position.
The VFF on Tuesday said the Competitions Committee is a key part in the AFC’s system which holds major influence over continental football tournaments. The appointment was not only recognition for Tuấn but also Việt Nam’s contribution to Asian football
AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa extended his congratulations to Tuấn, saying he believed the Vietnamese official would do his best to contribute to Asian football.
Tuấn, who pledged to fulfil his duties in the new position, will begin his new four-year assignment on July 23. His term will end in 2023.
“It is an honour for not only me but also Việt Nam. As chairman I will face with challenges and shoulder heavy pressure as the Competitions Committee is a core part of the AFC. However I will work hard and do my best to complete the duty,” he said.
Tuấn is also a member of the AFC Executive Committee. He played a part in the decision to expand the number of teams competing at the Asian Cup final round from 16 to 24 this year.
He also spoke up to change rules in the AFC Cup and AFC Champions League to ensure equality between teams in different regions. — VNS
